Larry Reardon a coach, friend and mentor to many in the West Roxbury/Roslindale community passed away late last week.  He was one of the original travel team coaches in the formative years of what is now Parkway Youth Hockey.

Originally known as West Roxbury Youth Hockey, he coached many boys during the height of the Bobby Orr – Big Bad Bruins era, many of whom went on to play hockey in high school and college.  In addition, to coaching in Parkway Youth Hockey program, he also successfully coached the Holy Name CYO hockey team for a number of years.

Most of all Mr. Reardon was a true gentleman.

Mid-Season Update / Looking Ahead to Try-Outs

Dear Parkway Youth Hockey Members -

On behalf of the Board of Parkway Youth Hockey we hope you and your families are having a successful and enjoyable 2014-2015 season.  Between the weekly travel, practices and related activities the youth hockey season provides both challenges and rewards and we appreciate your continued support of the program and our teams.

The Board wanted to take this opportunity especially for our newer members to highlight some upcoming items so you can plan accordingly for the remainder of the season:

     -    For the travel programs several levels have been involved in state play down games over the past few weeks. These will determine the District #1 participants for the state-wide Mass Hockey tournaments later this season. Also, later in the season both the Valley League and the South Shore Conference will have league playoff games.

     -   The Board will soon schedule and publish registration and try out dates for next season’s (2015-2016) travel teams. We ask you to check the web site beginning in mid-February for additional news related to try outs. Please note, families must remit any outstanding balances currently owed to PYH in order to participate in league playoff games and to register children for try outs.  Additionally, as last year, children will not be rostered to a team for next season if any balance remains outstanding subsequent to try outs.

Currently approximately $60,000 remains outstanding to PYH in travel and house program fees for this season. Like you, PYH must meet its monthly expenses in order to operate successfully. These expenses include ice costs, skills sessions and league fees. We appreciate your cooperation in this regard.

     -   House programs (Learn to Skate, Instructional and Mite House) will conclude on the weekend of March 7 & 8, 2015. We want to thank the program coordinators and volunteers who make these programs a success each year.

If you have any questions, please contact us.  Thank you!

Parkway Request for Support

PYH Community,

My name is Anne Marie Dorsey and many of you might know me from the Learn to Skate Program if you have a child between the ages of 4 to 17. Over the course of the last 13 years I have volunteered as a Learn to Skate Coach and Coordinator for Parkway Youth Hockey.  It is a volunteer position that gives me joy and leaves me with a sense of accomplishment while giving back. I know the kids as well as the parents appreciate all that I as well as the other volunteers do week in and week out to teach their children to skate and are always supportive. Now I am asking for your support in a different way.

What you may not know about me is that over the course of the last 6 years my family and I have been involved with Tedy's Team (Tedy Bruschi Foundation) and the American Stroke/Heart Association as members who run the Boston Marathon.  After this year’s race we can count five of my 13 siblings (yes I am one of 13), as well as my cousin Tom, will have run the marathon thus far and my youngest sister Margaret has run twice.  Last year those who ran in 2013 (Mark and Tom) also ran again.  Team Casey was initially the idea of my sister Margaret who after losing over 100 pounds decided to take on the challenge and run in memory of my dad.

Having experienced firsthand my father suffering through two major strokes during my early adulthood which caused him to spend the last year of his life struggling with cerebromedullospinal disconnection (a rare neurological disorder that causes complete paralysis) my family is driven to make others aware of the warning signs of stroke.  Over the years through events and fundraising we have educated hundreds and raised thousands.  This year is not different in terms of what we will be doing.

What will be different this year  is the fact that my mom passed away this past August and as the " Captain of Team Casey" and the women who showed us her strength and faith through her actions and support for many years she is and will be missed at our Team Casey Fundraiser.  However my mom would want this legacy to continue and thus we are more determined than ever to ensure we reach many more with our message about the signs of stroke and break records with fundraising for this important cause so very important and dear to each of us.

I am writing to ask if you might consider joining TEAM CASEY for TEDY's TEAM on Friday, March 20 from 7 p.m.-12 p.m. for a night of music, raffles and fun.   A flyer with details is provided with this email or you can check us out on facebook

https://www.facebook.com/TeamCaseyBostonMarathon2015

If you cannot attend this fundraiser please consider making a financial donation via  http://tedysteam2015.kintera.org/casey

No donation is too small and all donations are tax deductible to the American Heart Association.

I sincerely thank you for your consideration and support at this time.

Anne Marie Dorsey

Dear Parkway Youth Hockey League Members -

As required by PYHL's by-laws, nominations for seven (7) positions on the Board of Directors will be accepted from members of Parkway Youth Hockey at the March 10, 2015 Board meeting scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Community Room of the District E Police Station (adjacent to the Holy Name rotary).  The Board election shall take place at PYHL's annual meeting April 14, 2015

The 15 members of the Board of Directors are elected by the voting members of PYHL and serve terms of two years, beginning on May 1 of the year in which such Director is elected.  This year seven (7) members of the Board shall be elected.  The Directors manage the operation of PYHL programs and it is a volunteer position.

At the time of the election a voting member is entitled to cast a vote in favor of as many nominees as there are vacant Board seats. Those nominees receiving the highest number of votes shall be elected to the Board. In the event of a tie in the vote of the membership for election of the final member of the Board of Directors in any given year, the existing members of the Board of Directors will vote between or among the persons whose election resulted in the tied vote, and by such vote the Board of Directors will break the tie and elect the final member of the Board.

If the number of nominees is less than the number of seats to be filled by election, no election by the members will need to be held and all nominees shall be deemed elected. Vacancies on the Board of Directors, due to resignation, removal, lack of a sufficient number of nominees or otherwise, shall be filled by election by a majority of the Board of Directors.

Thank you for your continued participation.
